Hi Everyone,

We're on hiatus this week while our unflagging host looleebelle tackles things on the home front. (Send big hugs!)

So use this time as you will, to write like mad, or give yourselves a well-earned break or re-grouping time, and we'll be back next week.

Perhaps go play at the Generation Kill Spring Fling: Survival Fest if you fancy a distraction or change in direction. Maybe one of the prompts will get your juices flowing again.

Please still use this post to let us know where you're up to with your fics and what particular challenges you're facing with it at the moment.

It would also be lovely to know which of the posts so far have helped you or resonated most particularly with your writing process at the moment!

This round of Good Cookies is dedicated to the creation of fanworks that explore the theme, “Marine Corps Birthday:” how the Marines’ (and Reporter!) celebrate the big day. How do they feel about the shindig? Who do they bring along? How long does it take them to strap into their full dress blues? How do they respond to their non-straight brothers and sisters bringing their dates? Who loses their hat in a drunken poker game at a bar three blocks over from the big bash?

Make a prompt, pick a prompt, make a fanwork, and post it in the comments! Prompts can be used multiple times, and by anyone--whether you're planning to participate in yagkyas or not. We'll collect the prompts and responses as we go along.

And not only are we celebrating the big birthday, we’re celebrating YAGKYAS as well, so feel free to get your squee on in the comments.

Good Cookie, definition: 1. Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal; 2. Generation Kill fanworks created for YAGKYAS. Can include short (under 1000 words) ficlets, drabbles, drawables, mixtapes, fanart, whatever!

The Generation Kill fandom has been so very good – this year, and every year since our fandom invasion began. In celebration of this excellent fandom, YAGKYAS is going to be a Good Cookie extravaganza this year! Not only are we kicking off sign-ups with a Good Cookies post, we're going to do one a month, each one with a unique, timely theme. Fear not, December will still be the traditional free-for-all.

As the leaves turn, as the days grow shorter, fall is a time for contemplation. Deep, serious thoughts. Like, it's been almost a year since the last American troo ps left Iraq, almost ten years since the invasion. And so YAGKYAS presents:

then_and_now_banner

This round of Good Cookies is dedicated to the creation of fanworks that explore the theme, “Then and Now:” how the Marines’ (and Reporter’s!) lives have changed since the invasion. What’s different? What’s the same? How do they look back upon the invasion? How did it impact them?

Make a prompt, pick a prompt, make a fanwork, and post it in the comments! Prompts can be used multiple times, and by anyone--whether you're planning to participate in yagkyas or not. We'll collect the prompts and responses as we go along. Feel free to chat and buzz about how excited you are for YAGKYAS, too!

To prompt a ficlet/drabble/drawble/fanart, give a character, pairing, and a short phrase or quote:
    Colbert/Fic: The Ten Year War
Colbert/Person: “So dawn goes down to day/Nothing gold can stay”
Patterson, “That sonofabitch still has my Oakleys”
Reyes, a superhero even without the uniform

To request icons/fanart/something else, put:
    ICON: Ray looking back
FANMIX: Where has the time gone?
FANMIX: “It's times like these you learn to love again”

To fill a prompt, please reply to that prompt with the word FILL (just like that, in bold caps), in either the subject line or as the VERY FIRST WORD of the comment.

Prompts (in order posted)!
Reporter, Any: Interviewing the guys again for a follow-up article.

Nate/Brad/Ray: "Shh, spoilers."

Ray: Reflecting on what he actually learned from OIF that applies to real life.

Walt & Ray (or Walt/Ray): Ray finds him in a bar, alone. It's been nearly ten years.

16th-Dec-2011 10:28 am - YAGKYAS 2011 Good Cookies!
Hi all! The mods are working on YAGKYAS to go live next week, but in the meantime, here's this year's Good Cookie post!

Pick a prompt, make a fanwork, and post it in the comments! Prompts can be used multiple times, and by anyone--whether you're participating in yagkyas or not. Feel free to leave more prompts in the comments, or post new ficlets, drabbles, and other fanworks you're working on. The more the merrier! Let's celebrate GK and YAGKYAS as we go into the home stretch.

If none of these prompts turn your crank, you can always pick one from 2009 or 2010, or throw a new prompt in the comments. Feel free to chat and buzz about how excited you are for YAGKYAS, too!

Prompts behind the cut!Collapse )

And here's the collected fills, behind the cut!Collapse )

Hi everyone! The YAGKYAS elves are working busily behind the scenes getting stories prepped for the reveal on December 20th! In the meantime, we wanted to get some prompting and requests going for the Good Cookie post, which goes live on Friday, December 17th. What's a Good Cookie, you ask?

Good Cookie, definition: Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal

If you love yagkyas , or you love the GenKill fandom, or you love spreading the love of Generation Kill during this holiday season, then you want to make a Good Cookie. Good Cookies are like Yuletide Treats: short (less than 1000 word) ficlets, drabbles, drawbles, mixtapes, fanart, whatever!

This post will collect prompts and requests from all who want to make them--whether you're participating in YAGKYAS or not. Then, on Friday, we'll make a post with all the requests and prompts, and you can get to giving out cookies, as many as you want! Just comment on the post with your fanwork, or a link to your fanwork, and start working up an excited froth for the story reveal!

To prompt a ficlet/drabble/drawble/fanart, give a character, pairing, and a short phrase or quote:

Colbert/Fick, "dancing with myself"
Espera, Nietzsche's "God is Dead"
Christeson, Jay-z is a better rapper than Kanye
To request icons/fanart/something else, put:
ICON: Brad smiling
FANMIX: Mix for a desert road trip

Leave up to five prompts, and we'll collect and post them on Friday!

Now that yagkyas assignments have gone out, let me know if anyone wants to resurrect the Fic Finishing Fest for November. I've settled in at work and shouldn't have a problem with the daily posts.

12th-Aug-2011 10:56 am - CJSF3 Hiatus

I meant to post this yesterday but I got caught up in actually writing my warbigbang. CJSF3 has officially been called due to lack of interest. GK is still an approved fandom over at ficfinishing, which is where I'll be, finishing up my story this month.

shoshannagold and I discussed it last month and maybe we'll see if there's a need to resurrect our own fic finishing fest for the holiday writing exchanges that go on.

In the meantime, everyone be sure to thank shoshannagold for the use of her comm for the three successful months we had of CJSF3.

6th-Aug-2011 11:36 pm - CJSF3 Interest????

Sign-ups for the Fic Finishing Fest technically go on until 12 August, but only 2 people have signed up by this point. Is there any real interest for this month? I don't mind keeping it going but only if enough people have an interest. There are always last minute sign-up, but usually there are many more already signed-up by this point.

The sign-up post is here. If you've been meaning to and haven't gotten around to signing up, now's as good a time as any.

1st-Aug-2011 02:54 pm - CJSF3 Round 4 Sign-Ups
Is anybody up for Round 4 of CJSF3? I know a lot of us are still writing warbigbang and our drafts are due in September. We'll try this again and see if we get enough people signing up.

So, to recap:
CJSF3 is a Generation Kill specific [info]ficfinishing fest running over the course of the summer, right here on [info]combat_jack. Why reinvent the wheel? We’re pretty much going to run it parallel with [info]ficfinishing. If you don’t want to jump into the larger comm, then stay right here in the happy and comfortable world of Generation Kill. If you have a GK fic that needs finishing and you think 2 weeks is all you need to complete either the full story or a chapter, sign up here by commenting, to join us in finishing it. You know what? Even if there’s no chance you’ll finish anything significant, but you just need to get words on paper, sign up here. If you are willing to read very rough, raw, not-ready-for-public-consumption fic and ‘midwife’ it into completion, sign up here with a comment. We’re taking sign-ups until 12 August.

How it will work …

Each day, one of us will post a mirror of the task for the day at [info]ficfinishing. Writers, do your best to complete the task and get words on the page. As the day comes to an end, writers comment with an updated word count. First readers, answer the comment with a reply that encourages the progress and continuing effort. Writers, ask one of the readers to read your story and give you encouragement. Readers, if a story idea a writer lists intrigues you, volunteer to read it and provide encouragement. Again, first readers are cheerleaders, not beta readers, so it’s a stress-free job!

At the end of the 14 days, writers post the sum total of their progress, by listing their starting word count, and their ending word count. When fics are completed, writers usually post straight to the comm that the fic is finished and everyone celebrates. If a first reader transitions to a beta reader, which I’ve done, that’s between the reader and the writer. Then we all get to sit and wait for the finished product to hit the Generation Kill comms!

So, if you’d like to join us to write, comment below with:

Comment Subject Line: Writer
Your fic title, even if it’s a working title
Pairing
Plot or outline (crossovers are welcome, as long as the primary fandom is GK)
Current word count
Misc: anything that might make your story seem more interesting OR indicates how much help you desperately need to get it finished, such as: “this has been a WIP on my computer for 3 years I’m trying to get it done!”

If you’d like to be a first reader, comment below with:

Comment Subject Line: First Reader
Pairings you’re comfortable reading
Acceptable kink level or any squicks Again, you can check out my first reader sign up post for examples.
Means of communication list your email or chat ID’s that you prefer to use in communicating with a writer

1st-Aug-2011 01:25 am - CJSF3 Round 3 Ends!

Excerpted from ficfinishing

Round 3 is now over!

Authors please post your final status in comments so we can update this post with the results of everyone's goal fic attempts. If you finished a first draft of your goal fic (no matter how rough) please make a Fic Finished! post to the comm with a subject line of Fic Finished! If you did not finish, but got words during the round post to let us know how many new words you got during the round. If you were unable to participate for the round and thus did not get words let us know and you'll be marked as having withdrawn from the round.

Thank you so much to every one of you - Authors and First Readers alike - for all that your patience and support! As always there has been a ton of new words - movement on partial fic old, older and even ancient - showing that if there's a will there are new words written. You're a wonderful group of people - coming together with a common goal of helping everyone surmount their difficulties and move forward. This is such a great community and you have yourselves to thank for it. My utmost thanks to you for all that you do and for being the awesome people you are!

This concludes Round 3. Stay tuned for Round 4!? Maybe?

31st-Jul-2011 05:56 pm - CJSF3 Round 3 End of Active Portion
The active portion of Round 3 - the fourteen days of intensive writing - is over.

The round is still open through the end of the month though.

Authors - Please post the current status of your goal fic in comments. If you have finished your fic please post a public Fic Finished! post to the comm with a subject line of Fic Finished!

Authors and Readers - Feel free to use this post for updates and cheerleading through the end of the month if you'd like to continue with doing this on the comm.

Congratulations to all the authors on all your new words!

23rd-Jul-2011 11:28 am - Fic Finished
Thanks to emmademarais over at ficfinishing and finite_farfalla and whizzy, who (unbeknown to them) provided just the right balance of distraction and motivation, I got my goal chapter for this round finished.

The entire fic stands at 12,791 words and I have a long way to go, still, but I've reached one goal and this is good!

18th-Jul-2011 01:42 am - BDSM Big Bang Fic Finished
My Generation Kill fic for the BDSM Big Bang is FINISHED! I worked on this fic during Rounds 1 & 2. It's only the rough draft, but I beat the deadline of the 25th. I'm sitting at about 18,500 words right now and when I'm done I'll probably top 20K.

Now I can take my time doing edits and finding a beta!

I've slacked off on my War Big Bang which is what I'm signed up to finish during the current round so this will free me up to keep my focus on the current round.

Yay, me!
